MA Hashem


MA Hashem is the founder and chairman of Partex Group. He is a former member of Parliament from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. His wife is Sultana Hashem.

Career

In 1959, Hashem began with career by trading tobacco. He went on to establish Partex Group, one of the largest companies in Bangladesh. He served as the Chairperson of The City Bank. He exapnded his business into consumer goods, hard boards, insurance, real estate and steel.
Hashem was elected to Parliament in 2001 from Noakhali-2 as a Bangladesh Nationalist Party candidate. He was arrested by the Caretaker Government in 2007 during the 2006-2008 Bangladesh political crises. He left Bangladesh Nationalist Party in 2008 after being released from jail. He also claimed that he was forced to join Bangladesh Nationalist Party by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.
In January 1992, United Commercial Bank provided a 200 million taka loan to Russel Vegetable Oils Limited, an edible oil refinery. At that time, his wife's, Sultana Hashem, two brothers were directors of United Commercial Bank. Another loan was approved in November 1992 by the bank for the refinery for 4.5 million taka. The loan was rescheduled 4 times till 2000. The Bank then sued the company to get it's money back. In 2008, when Hashem and his son, Showkat Aziz Russell, were Directors of United Commercial Bank; the bank agreed to settle the case for a payment of 50 million taka. Hashem had served as the chairman of United Commercial Bank for five years.
On 8 April 2011, Hashem and 11 members of his family were indicted by a court in Dhaka on a tax evasion case. The case was filed by National Board of Revenue, which accused them of dodging 5.97 billion taka in taxes from 2006 to 2008.
On 21 January 2020, Bangladesh Bank ordered the freezing of Hashem's accounts along with those of other officials of International Leasing And Financial Services Limited over the embezzlement by P. K. Halder. Hashem is the Chariman of International Leasing And Financial Services Limited and the former Managing Director of Jamuna Bank. The court replaced Hashem as the chairman with Ibrahim Khaled.
Hashem joined the Board of Trustee of IBAIS University in 2013. He is a member of the North South University trustee board. In 2019, he was the Chairperson of the Trustee Board of North South University.

Personal life

Hashem is married to Sultana Hashem. They have Six sons, Aziz Al Kaiser Tito, Aziz Al Mahmood, Aziz Al Masud, Ashfaq Aziz, Rubel Aziz, and Showkat Aziz Russell.
