Macclesfield Basketball Club


The Macclesfield Basketball Club is a basketball club recently reformed in 2011 in South Australia's Adelaide Hills. In previous years, the Basketball club had low numbers and the association and club folded. But, in 2011, a few residents of the Macclesfield town in South Australia decided to reopen the club after a rising number of people requesting that basketball return to the town. After forming the first committee, registration forms were sent out to interested players and from there, the club has boomed.
In its three-year history, the Macclesfield Basketball Club has produced some grand finalist teams. They include grand finals in both the C Grade competition and also in the Under 14's Division 2 competition.

Club Premierships

In 2011, the Macclesfield Basketball Club was formed, beginning with an Under 14's side and an Under 16's side. The following year, in 2012, a C Grade men's side was formed during the Winter Competition. In the 2012-2013 Summer Competition the Under 16's were runners-up in the grand final against another EHBA team, the "Onka Piranahs". Also in the 2012-2013 season, a second C Grade Men's team was added to the competition. The two C Grade "Bloods" teams went premiers in 2012-2013 Summer Competition in both divisions. Along with the C Graders, the Under 14's went premiers against opposing team, "Zodiacs".
For the first time in the club's history, one of their Under 16's male players was awarded the Most Valuable Player award in the Summer 2012-2013 Competition although the team lost their grand final. The trophy was awarded to player, Ryan Formosa for the most votes given by the umpires over the course of the year. In the C Grade, two players from the two teams received an MVP award. C Grade Division 1 player Paul Searl and C Grade Division 2 player Ryan Fennell were the two to receive this award.
In the 2013 Winter Competition, Ryan Formosa was Under 16's Division 2 Runner-Up MVP and Paul Searl was C Grade Men's Division 2 Runner-Up MVP. In the Winter Competition, the club fielded an Under 16's Division 2 team, a C Grade Men's and a B Grade Men's with the C Grade team winning the division two competition. In the following 2013-2014 Summer Competition, the club fielded two Under 16's teams, two C Grade teams and two D Grade teams.

Women's Competition

In 2013-2014 Summer Competition, the club formed its first women's team to compete in the A/B Women's Grade competition at Cornerstone College under the EHBA. The games take place at the college's gym, Inbarendi, in Mount Barker. The team is coached by students of the college attributing their contributions to their Duke of Edinburgh Award.
With reference to the second nickname the women's team have officially named themselves the Blood and Tarts, as most players have never played the game of basketball before and are untrained. It was also to draw a difference between the female team and the men's team.

Logo Alterations

For the beginning of the Women's competition, at the Macclesfield Blood and Tars Basketball club, alterations were made to the logo that would be placed on the females tops for gameplay. Yellow was added to the colour scheme and was inserted in the eyes, giving the wolf an "ever watching eye-look about it". The tops were designed and printed for the club by a local company, . The concept of using a modified motto and logo was the idea of founding committee member, current club president and A/B Women's team player, Tammy Irvine-Thomas.
