Mandalay Sports Media


Mandalay Sports Media is a self-financed sports content and media company that specializes in high-profile, broad-appeal and socially-impactful programming for all platforms. The company began in 2012 as a partnership between Peter Guber and Mike Tollin. MSM’s production, The Last Dance, set a record for the highest viewed ESPN documentary. The company is responsible for documentary and documentary series The Last Dance, Iverson, Kareem: Minority of One, Fastball, Morningside 5, Bluegrass Kingdom, CounterPunch, The Franchise, Summer Dreams, Every Street United and the Katy Perry Superbowl Halftime Special. In scripted series, MSM has produced Sin City Saints, Wedding Band, and Chuck.

History

In early 2012, MSM hired Jon Weinbach to be its executive vice-president and executive producer. Later, the company brought on Mason Gordon as an executive producer. Its original board of directors included Dick Glover and Paul Schaeffer, the longtime Chief Operating Officer of Mandalay Entertainment.
MSM’s formation also includes an investment from Columbia Capital and Rho Ventures, and the participation of CAA Sports. In 2014, the company acquired Roadside Entertainment, a sports and entertainment production company based in New York City. MSM’s partners are MSNBA, NFL, MLB, NCAA, MLS, CBS, FOX, ABC, ESPN, FOX Sports, NFL Network, MSG, HBO, Showtime, Hulu, Netflix, Aol, Vice Sports, XBOX Entertainment Studios, Yahoo, Funny or Die, Turner Sports, Tru TV, E! Network, Olympic Channel, Tribeca Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, La Costa Film Festival Walden Media, Millennium and Verizon.

Productions

Five Rings Films

MSM partnered with the International Olympic Committee and Frank Marshall to create and produce Five Rings Films, a premium documentary series about great moments and athletes from the history of the Olympics. Entrants in the series include The Nagano Tapes, about the 1998 Czech men’s ice hockey team, which won a 2018 Czech Film Critics award and was directed by Sundance-winner filmmaker Ondrej Hudecek; The Golden Generation, about the gold-medal-winning 2004 Argentina men’s basketball team, co-directed by Academy Award winner J.J. Campanella; and The Iron Hammer, about Chinese volleyball icon Lang Ping, which was directed by Joan Chen and was selected for the San Francisco International Film Festival and the Tribeca/YouTube “We Are One” Festival in 2020.

The Last Dance

Directed by Jason Hehir, this docu-series features exclusive footage from a film crew that had an all-access pass to the Bulls, as well as interviews of many NBA personalities including Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, and Phil Jackson. It premiered on ESPN on April 19, 2020, and set the ESPN documentary record with 6.1 million viewers, marking the highest-rated documentary content in ESPN history, according to a network release.
