Mario Vrančić


Mario Vrančić is a Bosnian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for English club Norwich City and the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.
Vrančić started his professional career at Mainz 05, playing mainly in its reserve team. In 2009, he had a loan spell with Rot Weiss Ahlen. Two years later, he joined Borussia Dortmund II. The following year, he moved to Paderborn 07. Three years later, he signed with Darmstadt 98. In 2017, Vrančić was transferred to Norwich City.
A former German youth international, Vrančić made his senior international debut for Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2015.

Vrančić was born in Slavonski Brod. His older brother Damir was also a professional footballer.

Club career

Early career

Vrančić came through Mainz 05's youth academy, which he joined in 2004 from a local club. He made his professional debut with Mainz 05 II in 2006 at the age of 17.
In June 2009, he was sent on a season-long loan to Rot Weiss Ahlen.
In January 2011, he moved to Borussia Dortmund II.

Paderborn 07

Vrančić signed a two-year contract with Paderborn 07 on 1 July 2012. He debuted in the opening match of season against Hertha BSC, and scored his first goals in the next match against VfL Bochum.
Vrančić was instrumental in his team's first ever promotion to Bundesliga, which was sealed in May 2014. That same month, he extended his contract until June 2016.

Darmstadt 98

Vrančić was transferred to Darmstadt 98 on 24 June 2015 for an undisclosed fee. He made his debut in a DFB-Pokal match against TuS Erndtebrück on 7 August. He made his league debut two weeks later in a draw at Schalke 04. He scored his first goal for Darmstadt 98 against FC Augsburg on 12 March 2016.

Norwich City

Vrančić signed for English Championship club Norwich City on 8 June 2017 on a three-year contract. He made his debut for on 5 August against Fulham. Vrančić scored two goals on 19 September in an EFL Cup tie against Brentford, which were his first goals for the club. He scored his first league goal in a win over Reading on 17 March 2018.
Vrančić was an important piece in Norwich's conquest of the Championship title, which was sealed on 5 May 2019 and earned them promotion to the Premier League. He had an impact of 10 goals and 7 assists.
In July 2019, Vrančić signed a new two-year contract with Norwich. He scored his first Premier League goal in a home draw against Tottenham Hotspur on 28 December.

International career

Despite representing Germany at various youth levels, with whom he won the 2008 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, Vrančić decided to play for Bosnia and Herzegovina at senior level.
In June 2015, Vrančić's application to change his sports citizenship from German to Bosnian was approved by FIFA. Subsequently, in August 2015, he received his first senior call-up, for UEFA Euro 2016 qualifiers against Belgium and Andorra. Vrančić debuted in a win over latter on 6 September.
