Matheny's water system, Pratt Mutual, has elevated arsenic levels. Matheny residents are attempting to merge Pratt Mutual into Tulare's water utility. On April 1, 2016 the State Water Resource Control Board issued a mandatory water system consolidation order directing the City of Tulare to connect Matheny Tract to the Tulare County water system.

Demographics

The 2010 United States Census reported that Matheny had a population of 1,212. The population density was 2,820.5 people per square mile. The racial makeup of Matheny was 651 White, 44 African American, 24 Native American, 4 Asian, 0 Pacific Islander, 436 from other races, and 53 from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 890 persons.
The Census reported that 1,212 people lived in households, 0 lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 0 were institutionalized.
There were 320 households, out of which 188 had children under the age of 18 living in them, 164 were opposite-sex married couples living together, 61 had a female householder with no husband present, 41 had a male householder with no wife present.
