Matthew Smith (footballer, born 1999)


Matthew Robert Smith is a professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Manchester City and the Wales national football team.

Professional career

Born in Redditch, Smith was a youth product of West Brom before moving to the youth academy of Manchester City at the age of 14. On 3 July 2018, he moved on loan to FC Twente for the 2018–19 season. On 1 July 2019, Smith joined Queens Park Rangers on a season-long loan. After the loan was cut short early, he signed for Charlton Athletic on 31 January 2020 on loan until the end of the 2019–2020 season.

International career

Smith has played for Wales at under-17, under-19, under-21 and senior level, often captaining the side at youth level. He received a call-up to the senior Wales national football team on 20 May 2018.
Smith qualifies for the Welsh team as his grandfather is from Gwent, South Wales. He made his debut for Wales in a friendly 0–0 tie with Mexico, replacing Tom Lawrence after 81 minutes.
