Mehra

Mehra is a surname among some of the Rajput and Khatri communities of North India. According to Aditya Malik, Mehra remains a powerful community of Rajput landowners in Kumaon Division of Central Himalayas. The name may derive from the word Mihir, meaning sun, or mean chief or master.
Later modifications of this surname are Mehrotra and Malhotra. Whilst Mehra is a general Hindu or Sikh name with origins in the Punjabi language, Mehrotra and Malhotra are derived from the name of a Khatri clan whose founder has been claimed to be Mehr Chand. All the variants remain in use.
