The song has become a pop standard, performed by many artists, including The Lennon Sisters 1960, Bing Crosby, Gene Autry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Harry James, Slim Whitman, Vera Lynn, Burl Ives, Clint Eastwood and Jim Reeves. Bing Crosby recorded the song for Decca Records on July 11, 1938 and his version was the only one to reach the charts in the USA, achieving the number 3 spot in 1938. Crosby recorded the song again for his 1954 album .
The song was used in the 1939 film Mexicali Rose starring Gene Autry.
