The Shapiro–Virasoro model, the Virasoro algebra, the Virasoro constraint, and the Virasoro minimal model are named after him.

Work

Together with Giorgio Parisi and Marc Mézard Virasoro discovered the Ultrametric organization of low temperature spin glass states in infinite dimensions.
He was a director of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics from 1995 to 2002.
