Minister of National Revenue

The minister of national revenue is the minister of the Crown in the Canadian Cabinet who is responsible for the Canada Revenue Agency and the administration of taxation law and collection.

History

The Department of National Revenue was established in 1927 by expanding the former Department of Customs and Excise with a new facility for the collection of income tax, which had formerly been the responsibility of the Department of Finance. The office of minister of customs and excise was abolished and the office of minister of national revenue created on March 31, 1927.
The department became known as Revenue Canada during the 1970s. It subsequently became the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency in 1999. In 2003, the department was split into the Canada Revenue Agency and the Canada Border Services Agency, with the minister of public safety and emergency preparedness taking responsibility for the latter agency.
