The original Miracle-Gro company, Miracle-Gro Products, Inc, was founded by marketing executive Horace Hagedorn and nurseryman Otto Stern in 1950
Hagedorn's first wife Peggy is credited with coming up with the Miracle-Gro product brand name and Hagedorn its distinctive package design.
Hagedorn bought out Stern in the 1980s.
In 1995 Miracle Gro merged with Scotts; his son Jim is CEO and Chairman of the merged company.
Hagedorn retired from the business in 1997.
Horace Hagedorn died in 2005 at his Sands Point home, just short of his 90th birthday.
Otto Stern, the co-founder, was the uncle of noted historian Fritz Stern.
In The Five Germanys I Have Known Fritz Stern mentions his very rich cousin Otto who had invented Miracle-Gro.
