As of the census of 2000, there were 497 people, 180 households, and 129 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,322.5 people per square mile. There were 197 housing units at an average density of 1,316.9/sq mi. The racial makeup of the city was 0.40% White, 98.19% Black or African American, 0.20% Asian, 1.01% from other races, and 0.20% from two or more races. 1.21% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 180 households out of which 38.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 30.6% were married couples living together, 35.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% were non-families. 26.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.33.
