Morristown Red Sox


The Morristown Red Sox were a minor league baseball team representing Morristown, Tennessee from 1948–1954. The Morristown Red Sox played in the Mountain States League. Previous Morristown teams played as members of the Southeastern League and Appalachian League.
Morristown was an affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds.

History

Minor league baseball began in Morristown, Tennessee in 1910, when the Morristown Jobbers joined the four-team Class D Southeastern League.
The 1910 Morristown Jobbers finished 46–37, 2nd in the Southeastern League, 5.5 games behind the Southeastern League Champion Knoxville Appalachians.
In 1911, the Morristown Jobbers became charter members of the six-team Class D Appalachian League.
The Morristown Jobbers finished 46–50 in the first season of the Appalachian League, along with other charter members Asheville Moonshiners, Bristol Boosters, Cleveland Counts, Johnson City Soldiers and Knoxville Appalachians .
In 1912, the Morristown Jobbers finished 41–60, 6th and last in the Appalachian League. After the 1912 season, Morristown folded.
The Morristown Jobbers were reformed in 1913. On June 9, 1913, the Cleveland Counts from Cleveland, Tennessee, relocated to Morristown. The Counts were 10–12 at the time of the move. The Cleveland/Morristown team finished 45–35 overall, 3rd in the 1913 Appalachian League.
The Morristown Jobbers remained in the four-team Appalachian League in 1914. On June 17, 1914, the Jobbers were 15–13 and tied for first with the Middlesboro Colonels when the franchise folded. Middlesboro folded on the same date, causing the Appalachian League to fold.
Morristown rejoined the Class D Appalachian League in 1923, when the Morristown Roosters began play in the six-team league.
The Morristown Roosters finished 45–60 in the 1923 Appalachian League. In 1924, the Roosters finished 55–52, 2nd in the Appalachian League, behind the champion Knoxville Pioneers.
In 1925, the Appalachian League folded mid-season. The Morristown Roosters were in 2nd place with a 22–22 record when the league disbanded on July 15, 1925.
In 1948, minor league baseball returned to Morristown. The Morristown Red Sox became charter members of the reformed Class D Mountain States League.
The 1948 Morristown Red Sox won the Mountain States League Championship. The Red Sox finished 70–46, 1st in the regular season under Manager James Grigg. In the playoffs, the Morristown Red Sox defeated the Newport Canners 3 games to 2. In the Finals, the Morristown Red Sox defeated the Hazard Bombers 3 games to 2 and captured the championship. The Morristown Red Sox 1948 attendance was 37,744, an average of 651, second in the league.
The Red Sox advanced to the Mountain States League Finals in 1949. Morristown finished 72–52 in the 1949 regular season under manager James Grigg. In the playoffs, the Morristown Red Sox defeated the Jenkins Cavaliers 3 games to 2. In the Finals, the Harlan Smokies defeated the Morristown Red Sox 3 games to 2. Morristown drew 44,362 for the season, 2nd in the league.
After a 6th place 56–67 season in 1950, the Morristown Red Sox advanced to the Mountain States Finals in 1951. The Red Sox finished 86–39 in the 1951 regular season under Manager James Burns. In the playoffs, the Morristown Red Sox defeated the Middlesboro Athletics 3 games to 1 and advanced. In the 1951 Finals, the Hazard Bombers swept the Morristown Red Sox 3 games to 0. Morristown's season attendance was 22,184.
The Morristown Red Sox made another trip to the Mountain States League Finals in 1952. The Red Sox finished 61–58 in the regular season under James Burns. In the playoffs, the Morristown Red Sox advanced by defeating the Hazard Bombers 3 games to 1. In the league Finals, the Harlan Smokies won the championship in sweeping the Morristown Red Sox 3 games to 0. Morristown's attendance was 10,597, an average of 178 per game, fifth of the six league teams.
Morristown returned to the playoffs in 1953. The Morristown Red Sox finished 64–62, losing in the playoffs to the Knoxville Smokies 3 games to 1. The Morristown 1953 season attendance was 37,384, second in the league.
Morristown had two teams in the 1954 Mountain States League season. The Morristown Red Sox were 7-7 when the team folded on May 15, 1954. On June 15, 1954, the Maryville-Alcoa Twins moved to Morristown and continued play as the Morristown Twins. The Morristown Twins then folded on July 7, 1954 with a 29–34 record. The Mountain States League permanently folded on July 20, 1954.
The Morristown Twins were an affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. They were succeeded in Morristown by the Morristown Cubs, who joined the Appalachian League in 1959.
