Mukerian has some 23 rice mills. Famous for its rice production across Punjab and across India, prominent rice mills export their product all over the world. The sugar mill at the south of the city is one of the biggest sugar mills in Punjab. Mukerian Paper Ltd. is a major employer in the region.
