Multimedia University


Multimedia University, abbreviated as MMU, is the first ever full-fledged private university in Malaysia. The university has three campuses, located in Melaka, Cyberjaya and Johor.
The university hosts 9 faculties and 8 research institutes.

History

In 1994, Telekom Malaysia Berhad, established the Institute of Telecommunication and Information Technology in Taiping, Perak. The first campus was established on TM's former northern region office where the first batch of 42 students were selected to undergo an experimental 2-year telecommunication engineering diploma program. In 1996, with the academic success of the first two batches, TM was invited by the Ministry of Education the set up the first private university in Malaysia. ITTM was granted university status and renamed itself to Universiti Telekom.
In 1997, The Melaka campus was set up in the Ayer Keroh district. The setting up of the campus involved redeveloping and repurposing of the former TM southern region office.
TM was offered by the Government of Malaysia to establish a university in MSC Malaysia, then known as Multimedia Super Corridor, to catalyst the MSC program. A campus was set up in Cyberjaya and opened on 8 July 1999. The relationship between the Cyberjaya campus and the MSC is intended to be similar to the relationship between Stanford University and Silicon Valley. The university was renamed from Universiti Telekom to Multimedia University.
In 2013, MMU established a third campus in Iskandar Puteri, Johor specialising in cinematic arts in collaboration with the renowned University of Southern California.

Recognition and achievement

In 2002, The Multimedia Learning System of MMU won the Asia Pacific MSC IT & Telecommunication Award and the 2001 Asia Pacific Award for Best of Smart Learning Applications. During 2004, MMU secured four awards from the Ministry of Education, namely, the Highest Enrolment of Local Students, Excellence in R&D, the Highest Number of Courses Accredited, Special Award in Recognition of MMU's Overall Achievement.
In 2009, MMU was ranked at 171 by THES-QS in the Asian University Rankings, the first private university in Malaysia to achieve such a feat.MMU ranks at 175 by QS University Rankings:Asia 2019 and ranks 11th among Malaysian universities which follow IIUM.
Since 2015, MMU has been placed in the top 151-200 universities worldwide by QS World University Rankings by subject Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
MMU is ranked 151-200 by QS World University Ranking 2014 in the category of Computer Science and Information systems.

Faculties

Computing

MMU began with a single computing faculty known as the Faculty of Information Technology in 1997. After the establishment of the Cyberjaya campus in 1999, FIT was split into the Faculty of Information Science and Technology based in the Melaka campus, and Faculty of Computing and Informatics based in the Cyberjaya campus. FIST offers undergraduate programs with majors in Data Communications and Networking, Security Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Information Technology Management, Bioinformatics. The undergraduate programs in FCI offers specialisations in Software Engineering, Information Systems, and Game Development.

Business and Management

The Faculty of Business is based in Melaka. It offers programmes in Knowledge Management, Marketing Management, International Business, Human Resource Management, Banking & Finance, and Accounting. The Faculty of Management, based in the Cyberjaya campus, offers programmes in Accounting, Financial Engineering, Finance, Marketing, Management, and Economics.

Engineering & Technology

The Faculty of Engineering is based in Cyberjaya. It offers bachelor's degrees accredited by the Washington Accord in Electrical, Electronics, Computer, Telecommunications, Nanotechnology, and Optical Engineering. The Faculty of Engineering and Technology, based in Melaka, offers courses in Electronics and Mechanical Engineering. The majors offered by the FET Electronics Engineering courses are Robotics and Automation, and Telecommunications.

Creative Multimedia & Cinematic Arts

The Faculty of Creative Multimedia, based in the Cyberjaya and Johor campus, was established in 1999. Prior to that, it was based in the Melaka campus and known as the Faculty of Media Arts and Science. The Cyberjaya campus offers programs in Animation and Visual Effects, Advertising Design, Media Arts, Virtual Reality, and Interface Design. The Johor campus was established in 2013 to offer the Cinematic Arts program as part of FCM. The Cinematic Arts program was designed in collaboration with the University of Southern California.

Law

The Faculty of Law is based in Melaka. The university's law program was formerly a part of the business faculty, then known as the Faculty of Business and Law, before establishing as its own independent faculty in 2013. FOL students are fully exempted from taking the CLP examination.

Rankings

Multimedia University was ranked amongst the top 151-200 universities worldwide by QS World University Rankings by Subject Electrical and Electronics Engineering in 2015, 2016, and 2017 consecutively. It also was included in the QS World University Ranking in the 801-1000 rank worldwide. It was also ranked 193, 179 and 175 by QS Asian University Rankings in 2017, 2018 and 2019 respectively
