New York Orphan Asylum

The New York Orphan Asylum was founded in 1806 by Isabella Graham, Joanna Bethune, Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton and Sarah Hoffman. The Orphan Asylum Society first met on March 15, 1806, and the cornerstone of the asylum building in Greenwich Village was laid on July 7, 1807. West 4th Street was formerly named Asylum Street after the institution. The organization subsequently evolved into the current nonprofit Graham Windham.
