Nienburg II – Schaumburg

Nienburg II – Schaumburg is one of the 299 single member constituencies used for the German parliament, the Bundestag. One of thirty constituencies in the state of Lower Saxony, it contains the district of Schaumburg and the district of Nienburg with the exception of the collective municipalities of Uchte and Grafschaft Hoya. The constituency elects one representative under the mixed member proportional representation system. Under the current constituency numbering system, it is designated as constituency 40.
The constituency has existed since the 2002 election, when it succeeded the former Nienburg – Schaumburg constituency. From its creation until his resignation in February 2014 the constituency was represented by Social Democratic Party of Germany candidate Sebastian Edathy, a minister in the government of Angela Merkel. Edathy resigned, citing health reasons. This followed a scandal in which he was accused of purchasing child pornography, an allegation which he denied.
