Nitrobacteraceae is a family of Alphaproteobacteria. They are gram-negative and aerobic.
The bacteria of this family derive their energy from oxidizing ammonia to nitrite, or by oxidizing nitrite to nitrate.
They are commonly found in freshwater and soil.
