Non-cooperation movement (1971)


Non-cooperation movement was a political movement launched by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Bangladesh Awami League from 2 March to 25 March 1971. The Purpose of the movement was to seek autonomy for East Pakistan from the central government of Pakistan.

History

The Bangladesh Awami League had secured the absolute majority in the 1970 elections. The President of Pakistan, Yahya Khan, postponed the formation of the government. A move viewed unfavorably by sheikh Mujib. Sheikh Mujib called strikes on 2 and 3 March, calling for the speedy transfer of power. On 7 March 1971, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared the start of the non-cooperation movement through the historic 7th March Speech of Bangabandhu at the Ramna Race Course Maidan.
