North American Mycoflora Project


The North American Mycoflora Project is a collaboration between professional mycologists and citizen scientists to create a comprehensive online compendium of all species of macroscopic fungi in North America. The project encourages amateurs, working with professionals, to collect, document, preserve dried specimens, and sequence DNA of macrofungi throughout the continent. The project is overseen by the North American Mycoflora Project, Inc., a charitable 501 nonprofit organization registered in Indiana, USA.

History

In 2012, some 70 academic mycologists and scientific-oriented mushroom collectors met at Yale University to discuss the long-term goal of producing “a modern, comprehensive mycoflora of macrofungi for North America.” In 2017, at a meeting in Athens, Georgia, the project was reframed as a citizen science initiative. The North American Mycoflora Project, Inc., was formally established in December 2017.
