Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction


The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction is the administrative department of the Ohio state government that operates twenty-seven state prisons for adults and three facilities for juveniles. The sixth-largest prison system in America, at the end of 2018 it had 49,255 people in custody and a budget of $1.8 billion. It has its headquarters in Columbus.

Facilities

On 11 April 1993, a major riot broke out at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility that resulted in ten deaths. Nine inmates and one corrections officer were killed.

Death row

The majority of male death row inmates are held at the Chillicothe Correctional Institution, while some that are considered a high security risk are held at the Ohio State Penitentiary and those with serious medical conditions are held at the Franklin Medical Center. Death row had been scheduled to move from Chillicothe Correctional Institution to Toledo Correctional Institution in the summer of 2017, however those plans were delayed and ultimately cancelled in 2018 and death row remains at Chillicothe.
