Osey Ramulamma is a 1997 Telugu film based on a woman's rebellion in Telangana. It was directed by Dasari Narayana Rao. It stars Vijayashanti and Dasari Narayana Rao. The film premiered at the 1998 International Film Festival of India in the mainstream section. The film includes Krishna and Tamil actorRamki in supporting roles. The film was dubbed in Tamil and released as Adimaipenn. It was the only film in 1990s without any hero in the main role. It was a trendsetter and blockbuster in Indian films. The same thing happened in the 1980s with the Telugu film Prathighatana. Vijaya Shanthi is the only heroine who achieved this twice in Indian films.
Plot
Ramulamma, is born into the Dalit caste. At the young age of 13, she is impregnated by the Dora. The Dora orders his men to throw the baby away and kill Ramulamma. The baby is then found by Naxalites and is raised by them. Injured, Ramulamma is taken care of by a Dalit couple, who treat her as their sister. They live in a typical feudal Telangana village where the Doralu exploit peasants in the name of bonded labour and debts. Ramulamma is asked to work at the Dora ghadi to be a maid of Dorasani. One day, Dora's son forcefully attempts to rape Ramulamma. She kills him in his bed. Learning of this, Dora wants to kill Ramulamma, but she is rescued by Naxalite leader Komranna and taken to the forest where Komaranna and other Naxalites live. She learns the ideology, begins to believe in it, and gradually becomes a leader after Komaranna. Meanwhile, Ramulamma's son is killed by Dora. CBI officer who is sent by Central Government to look into the Naxalite issue, convinces Ramulamma and Komaranna to surrender. But later he finds that the Government is corrupt and that the Doras are ruling the government. He learns that Ramulamma is to be killed by the Doras. He helps Ramulamma escape from jail, but Komaranna and the CBI officer die in the gunfight with the police. Ramullama finally kills Dora.
The music was composed by Vandemataram Srinivas. Srinivas gained Nandi award and Filmfare south award for his work. The songs were sung by him. The album featured singers including S. Janaki, K. S. Chithra, Mano, Swarnalatha, M. M. Keeravani and M. M. Srilekha.
