Oyinkan Braithwaite


Oyinkan Braithwaite is a Nigerian-UK novelist and writer. She was born in Lagos and spent her childhood in both Nigeria and the UK.

Life

Braithwaite was born in Lagos in 1988 then spent most of her childhood in the UK when her family moved to Southgate in north London. She had her primary school education in London then returned to Lagos when her brother was born in 2001. She studied law and creative writing at Surrey University and Kingston University before moving back to Lagos in 2012.
She has worked as an assistant editor in publishing house Kachio.

Writing career

Deadline described her debut book as a darkly comedic story and the book has been praised by The New York Times, The Washington Post, Marie Claire and authors Ayobami Adebayo and Edgar Cantero and considered for a movie by the producers of Baby Driver. It has been longlisted for the Booker Prize and was the second-highest best-selling title on the list as of July 2019, with 13,052 units sold according to Nielsen BookScan.
