History

Until 1918, Prestitz – Přeštice was part of the Austrian monarchy, in the district of the same name, one of the 94 Bezirkshauptmannschaften in Bohemia.
After the end of World War II, exactly 1,795 Torah scrolls were discovered stockpiled within an abandoned synagogue in the town. Today most of these scrolls are under the protection of museums and preservation societies, though a few have been donated to synagogues internationally.
