Padma Kuppa


Padma Kuppa, a Democrat, is a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from the 41st district, which includes the city of Troy. Kuppa is an Indian-American. She is the first Indian immigrant and Hindu in the Michigan Legislature. She has been named Assistant Whip in Michigan. Kuppa is currently President of the Troy Historical Society and a board member of the Michigan Round-table for Diversity and Inclusion.

Career

Kuppa is a former engineer for Chrysler Corp. and the city of Troy. She worked as Troy's Planning Commissioner for more than two years. Padma Kuppa defeated Doug Tietz in the general election for Michigan House of Representatives District 41 on November 6, 2018. Kuppa serves on the Energy Committee and the Local Government & Municipal Finance Committee. She is a founder of the Troy-area Interfaith Group.

Education

Kuppa earned her bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Warangal in India, and moved to the United States for Graduate School.

Early-Life

Born in India, Kuppa arrived in the United States, when she was 4 years old, to start kindergarten in 1970 on Long Island. Kuppa returned to India with her family in 1981, where she finished high school and undergraduate school. Padma Kuppa returned to New York in 1988 as a graduate student. Kuppa, her husband, and their two children have made Troy, Michigan their home since 1998.
