The racial makup of the city was 97.0% White, 1.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.4%. Of the 643 households 23.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.6% were married couplesliving together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, 2.8% had a male householder with no wife present, and 44.0% were non-families. 39.7% of households were one person and 20.6% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.07 and the average family size was 2.80. The median age was 49.4 years. 21.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 4.3% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 19.1% were from 25 to 44; 28.1% were from 45 to 64; and 27.5% were 65 or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.0% male and 51.0% female.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.61% of the population. Of the 660 households 27.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.9% were married couples living together, 8.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.8% were non-families. 38.0% of households were one person and 20.8% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.18 and the average family size was 2.88. The age distribution was 22.1% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 20.9% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 28.5% 65 or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.9 males. The median household income was $30,347 and the median family income was $40,000. Males had a median income of $26,154 versus $20,769 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,990.
