Patharkandi is a township located in Karimganj district in the Indian state of Assam. It is 350 kilometres south of the state capital Guwahati and 32 kilometres south of the district headquarters Karimganj. Approximately 90% of Patharkandi's residents are Bengalis who speak the Sylheti dialect, the rest being Bishnupriya Manipuri, Meiteis and some tribal groups like Khasi and Dimasa Kachari. Patharkandi is situated by the bank of the Longai River. Patharkandi is also an important police station and a name of an Assam Legislative Assembly constituency. It is an important market place in the district because it is main corridor to the Tripura from Assam. It includes prominent schools such as Central Public School, Patharkandi which is the only CBSE school in the township. Etymology
The name "Patharkandi" originated from the Bengali word pathar and kandi. Many peoples said the real old name is "Patarkandi" this name was kept hence the forest and tree was much tree leaf feeding elephants with bundle the word patar and kandi.
History
Patharkandi was formerly known as Pratapgarh. An independent state of Pratapgarh was established by Malik Pratap in the 15th century.
