Peter-André Alt


Peter-André Alt is a German literary scholar who has been president of the German Rectors' Conference since 2018. He previously served as president of the Free University of Berlin.

Career

Alt was appointed as professor of modern German literature at the University of Bochum in 1995, at the University of Würzburg in 2002, and at the Free University of Berlin in 2005. He was director of Dahlem Research School from 2008 to 2010. He has also been a visiting scholar at the University of Cambridge, Princeton University and several Italian universities.
On 12 May 2010 Alt was elected president of the Free University of Berlin. He became president of the German Schiller Society in July 2012. In 2018, Alt resigned from the Free University after having been elected president of the German Rectors' Conference.
Over the course of his academic career, Alt published 16 books and a number of articles, focusing in his research on the early modern period, Weimar Classicism and the modern classics.
