Peter Shaindlin is a luxury hospitality executive, currently Chief Operating Officer of Halekulani Corporation, a hotel group in Honolulu, Hawaii, United States.Holding a postgraduate Diploma in Global Business from University of Oxford's SAID Business School in the United Kingdom, he is also an internationally recognized cultural critic and active worldwide keynote speaker on luxury-related, arts, philosophical and cultural topics. He has been a visiting fellow and research scholar at University of Oxford's Harris Manchester College SRI since 2014, specializing in scholarship on the leadership and sustainability of "iconic institutions".
Hospitality career
Called a visionary in the global luxury hospitality industry, Shaindlin has gained professional recognition in a career spanning almost four decades. Prior to joining Halekulani Corporation, Shaindlin was founding principal of Lotus Luxury Group, a vice president of Rosewood Hotels & Resorts and previously oversaw institutions such as Rosewood Little Dix Bay, the Boca Raton Resort & Club, The Stanhope and Grand Bay Hotels in New York City and food and beverage operations at the Headquarters of the United Nations as assistant general manager. Shaindlin has played an active role in the arts and culture community in Hawaii and abroad for more than a decade, facilitating philanthropic efforts and initiatives through the encouragement of partnerships between arts and culture institutions. He spearheaded Halekulani Corporation's arts and culture partnerships including ʻIolani Palace, Hawaii Symphony, the Bishop Museum and Hawaii POPS, Chamber Music Hawaii, Hawaii Theatre, Hawaii Opera Theater, University of Hawaii, Pacific New Media, Hawaii Book & Music Festival, Honolulu Museum of Art, Liljestrand House, Shangri La and title sponsorship of the Hawaii International Film Festival. For these efforts, Halekulani Corporation was a 2017 recipient of the BCA-10 Awards of America for the Arts in Washington, DC. Shaindlin has lectured at ESSEC College of Luxury Brands and Hospitality in Versailles, France, Lynn University in Florida, and the University of Hawaii.
Professional affiliations and board memberships
A member of the Executive Committee of Leading Hotels of the World, Shaindlin has served on the executive board of Hawaii Arts Alliance, Hawaii Pops, the Merwin Conservancy and the International Luxury Hotel Association and is past Chairman of the Hawaii Symphony and was an executive board member of The Honolulu Symphony Foundation. He has served on the boards of the Bishop Museum, Hawaii Employers Council and the Japan-America Society of Hawaii, and is a lifetime member of the Oxford Union.
Arts and music
An established fine art photographer, Shaindlin's work is represented by Westwood Gallery in New York City since 2012, and has been exhibited at major American art fairs including ART MIAMI and ART WYNWOOD. His work was featured in Westwood Gallery's 2017 exhibition ‘Pacific to Atlantic: Contemporary Artists/Hawaii. In April 2017, his most recent European work was presented in Deuxmers Publishing’s Volume II of its cyclical publication TWO SEAS, 'Berlin: The Living and the Dead', a photographic montage consolidating three years of black and white photography of the city of Berlin, launched in conjunction with a solo exhibition of the same work in Honolulu, Hawaii at Outpost Gallery. He has four published books by Deuxmers LLC: the novella Citizen Steele, and three volumes of poetry: 18 Passions, Joys and Sorrows and The Swans of Pergusa. Shaindlin's newest book, 'Ravens, Nights,' collected poems written between 2016 and 2017, is to be released in 2019. Shaindlin was a featured writer at the 2017 Hawaii Book & Music Fair where he lectured on the western poetic canon, and performed a reading of poets featuring selections by Clare, MacNeice, Lucretius, Yeats, Rexroth, Mallarmé, Kingston and Neruda as well as his own work. He assisted Omer Kursat in the translations of selected Turkish poetry by 'Second New' poets for the book Keep the Change, published in December 2018 by Deuxmers Publishing LLC. His jazz composition Notre Amour with lyrics by Peter Shaindlin and Dawn Herron and arranged by Grammy Award winner Bill Cunliffe is recorded on the 2017 Na Hoku Hanohano Jazz Album of the Year 'Between the Music and the Moon' featuring Maggie Herron. In 2016 he co-founded an experimental musical ensemble with jazz and other influences, ‘Drift,’ based in Honolulu, Hawaii, which has featured the musical artists T'altosh on electric guitar, Will DiMartino on drums, and Ryan Lee Videgaard on acoustic bass. His classical trumpet studies at Mannes School of Music in the late 1970s were with William Vacchiano, Melvyn Broiles and Murray Karpilovsky, along with subsequent tutelage in the jazz idiom by Eddie Barefield, Tommy Turrentine, Ahmed Abdul-Malik, and Danny Stiles.
Personal life
One of six male siblings, Shaindlin is a son of Jack Shaindlin, the iconic late film composer and 20th Century Foxmusical director. He has two daughters, Valerie Brett Shaindlin and Lana ‘Svetlana’ Sophia Shaindlin, and a son, Jack Henry Seitz Shaindlin. His brother, Timothy Joseph Shaindlin, is the noted opera coach, conductor, operatic translator and linguist at Yale Opera, Yale University.
Education
His undergraduate university studies began in 1975 at Mannes School of Music followed by New York University, and eventually postgraduate diploma completion in Global Business at the University of Oxford. During his studies at Mannes he concurrently studied creative writing and poetry under Henry Shapiro at Marymount College in New York City.
