Pettai, Tirunelveli


Pettai is an industrial sub urban area in Tirunelveli City. It is located approximately 60 kilometers of downtown Tirunelveli along the Southern Railway line to Tenkasi. It is been administered by Tirunelveli City Municipal Corporation.

History

Pettai actually got its name from the Vandi Pettais.These Vandi Pettais were dealing with few agriculture commodities such as coriander, chilli, etc. Pettai Is An Urban Area With Large Population With Many Small Scale Industries.

Glorious Time

Similar to many towns, Pettai also had a glorious time when the Co-operative Spinning Mill was in operation. People from many towns across Tamil Nadu have flocked here for the employment in this mill. Most of them had settled here.

Industrial Estate

Pettai Industrial Estate is operated by SIDCO. The major products manufactured here are PVC pipes, tanks, cooking utensils, nails, matresses, etc. TANSI is also operated inside this estate. Government ITI and MSME are also functioning here.

Educational Institutions

Though Pettai is situated near the Oxford of South India, it also has a numerous educational institutions which serve for a long period.
Apart from this, there are number of private schools serving for the Pettai Public.

Pettai is famous for evening snacks such as Vadai, Murukku, etc. These eatables were famous because they were fried in the oils produced at traditional Oil Mills here. The place called chekkadi had a lots of chekku operated all the time. It is also famous for Parotta Stalls. Earlier only Pettai Hotels have serves parottas during lunch along with Rice.And It Is The Only City In Tirunelveli Which Is Always Awake.And It Is An Area Of Labourers.

Famous Person

. On his remembrance, the government hospital in has been renamed. The Cheranmahadevi road flows within Pettai is also named after him as Quaid e Millath Road.
Mathan Thevar Who Was A Big Shot Rowdy In 90's In South Tamil Nadu From Pettai. And Till Now Many Thevar Youths Are Praising Him As A Leader.

Shopping Hub

Pettai Bazaar is actually serving as a shopping hub for the nearby villages.

Entertainment

Pettai has a movie theatre called Meenakshi Theatre owned by Meenakshi Chettiar. This theatre is not in operation now.

At the 2001 census, Pettai had 1,060 inhabitants, with 534 males and 526 females.
