History

The first shop was opened by Nelson Lang and John Sotiriadis in 1995 near Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. The restaurant was located there due to thinking a college area was "recession-proof", with the restaurant being aimed at students. In 1997, The Pita Pit started to expand within Canada and in 1999 they began franchising in the United States. There are now over 500 restaurants in a total of 12 countries. Countries other than Canada and the United States include India, France, Brazil, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, United Arab Emirates and Ireland. The first location outside of Canada and the United States was in Auckland, New Zealand, which opened in 2007.
