Presidential Electoral College


The Presidential Electoral College is an electoral college made up of MPs that elects the President of Myanmar.

Composition

It consists of three separate committees:
  1. MPs who represent the proportions of MPs elected from each Region or State
  2. MPs who represent the proportions of MPs elected from each township population
  3. Military-appointed MPs personally nominated by the Tatmadaw Commander-in-Chief

    Nomination and selection

Each of the three committees nominate a presidential candidate. Afterward, all the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw MPs vote for one of three candidates—the candidate with the highest number of votes is elected President, while the other two are elected as Vice Presidents. The Vice Presidents are designated as First and Second Vice President based on who received the second and third highest number of votes.

2011 election

On 4 February 2011 after 2010 election, the Presidential Electoral College made up of Pyithu Hluttaw, elected Thein Sein as Vice Presidential Candidate, another electoral college made up of Amyotha Hluttaw, elected Sai Mauk Kham as another Vice Presidential candidate and also another electoral college made up of Tatmadaw elected Tin Aung Myint Oo as also another Vice Presidential Candidate. Among them, Thein Sein received highest number of votes from most Representatives in Pyidaungsu Hluttaw and elected as 8th President of Myanmar and Tin Aung Myint Oo received second highest votes as First Vice President and Sai Mauk Kham received third highest votes as Second Vice President of Thein Sein's Cabinet. When Tin Aung Myint Oo resigned on 1 July 2012 for health reasons, Sai Mauk Kham moved to serve as first Vice President of Myanmar the electoral college made up of Tatmadaw elected Admiral Nyan Tun who was former Commander in Chief of Myanmar Navy as Second Vice President of Myanmar.

On 15 March 2016 at Pyidaungsu Hluttaw final voting, Htin Kyaw received 360 votes and became 9th President of Myanmar, Myint Swe received 213 votes as First Vice President of Myanmar and Henry Van Thio received 79 votes as Second Vice President of Myanmar in Htin Kyaw's Cabinet.
