Proto Thema

Proto Thema is a Greek newspaper, published every Sunday. It was launched in 2005 by Makis Triantafyllopoulos, Themos Anastasiadis, and Tassos Karamitsos. An editorial team runs the newspaper, and all three of its founders are journalists; Triantafyllopoulos and Anastasiadis also host television talk shows.
Proto Thema has repeatedly achieved sales of over 200,000 issues in the relatively small Greek newspaper market. As of 2006, it frequently led the chart of top-selling Sunday newspapers, ahead of To Vima and Eleftherotypia.
In late December 2005, the newspaper broke the story of an alleged coverup by the Greek government of torture of Pakistani terrorist suspects.
Triantafyllopoulos left the newspaper after a disagreement with his partners related to Zachopoulos sex scandal.
The newspaper has been widely being criticised of being closely affiliated and/or even getting funded through third-party sources with the "New Democracy" political party and supporting the current Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
In January-May 2020 the website protothema.gr was one of the most popular and reliable sources in Greek Wikipedia. According to Alexa, the website protothema.gr is the 3rd most popular website in Greece.
