Purley, Texas


Purley is an unincorporated community in Franklin County, Texas, United States. Purley is located at the junction of Texas State Highway 37 and Farm to Market Road 900 south of Mount Vernon.

History

Purley was first settled in the 1850s. A post office opened in Purley in 1879, and a one-room schoolhouse was established by 1896. The town had a population of 150 and several businesses through the late 1800s, but the community diminished in the 1900s, falling to a population of twenty with no businesses by 1966. The population of Purley grew to 81 by 1972, where it remained through 2000; a business opened in the community in 1988.
