Synopsis

Raghuveer Singh, the rich patriarch of a landowning family, is found dead in his bedroom on the night of his wedding. His first wife has gone missing five years ago, leaving him with two children - a pregnant daughter, Karuna and a moody teenage son, Karan. Karuna's overly ambitious husband is eyeing for a share of his father-in-law's estate. Living not too far from them is Raghuveer's sister, Pramila, her handsome son, Vikram and her arrogant daughter Vasudha. There is only one servant around, Chunni, whose father used to be the family's driver but has since gone missing along with the landowner's first wife half a decade ago.
Inspector Jatil Yadav is sent to investigate the murder and meets Raghuveer's family. He is also introduced to Radha, Raghuveer's young bride-turned-widow. Jatil recognizes her as the girl he once stopped from running away from home five years ago. He now realizes her father had actually sold her off as a mistress to Raghuveer. Radha reveals her scars to Jatil by claiming Raghuveer abused her. In addition to that, Jatil also finds various pornographic materials around the dead landowner's private chambers. The inspector quickly realizes that most of Raghuveer's family members want to pin the murder on Radha in order to protect their own self-interests.
Jatil's first suspect is Vikram, Raghuveer's favourite nephew who was the first to have found the body. Jatil learns that Vikram and Radha were having an affair behind Raghuveer's back. Vikram had promised to elope with Radha but changed his mind because displeasing his uncle means losing his inheritance. Moreover, he is engaged to the daughter of Munna Raja, a corrupt local politician who was best friends with Raghuveer. However, Jatil has to rule out both Vikram and Radha as suspects since they were together when Raghuveer was being murdered.
The next suspect is the servant girl, Chunni who had filed a police complaint over her father's disappearance but the case was closed by Munna. However, she fears Raghuveer's family because of their connections to the corrupt politician. As a result, she and her grandmother continue to work at the family mansion despite knowing someone in their employer's family knows what happened to her father. However, Jatil comes to realize that Chunni is too timid and fearful of the family to even consider murder.
Another suspect is Munna Raja, who Raghuveer has helped in elections before. However, Raghuveer himself was planning on running for office this time, which would have displeased Munna. When Munna learns that Jatil has convinced Chunni to be his informant, he has his henchman murder her. To prevent Jatil from solving the case, he tries to have the inspector murdered too.
However, Jatil manages to leave the village. Realizing that Radha's life is also in danger, he takes her with him. While fighting off Chunni's killer, the henchman reveals that five years ago, he had Raghuveer's first wife and driver murdered on Munna Raja's orders. Fortunately, Jatil and Radha manage to escape to Raghuveer's secret farmhouse, where he used to abuse his mistresses. While looking around, Jatil finds more pornographic materials and an old prefect's badge from a nearby boarding school. He goes there and learns that Raghuveer's niece, Vasudha was a head prefect there but was expelled when the nuns found out she was pregnant. Raghuveer was the one who arranged for an abortion before taking her home. Jatil finally puts the pieces together and figures out the truth.
Later that night, while Raghuveer's and Munna's families are celebrating Radha and Jatil running away, the two of the them suddenly reappear at the mansion. Jatil reveals that Vasudha was the one who murdered her own uncle on his wedding night. She did it out of spite because he had been raping her for years. He was also the one who impregnated her, which is why he quietly arranged for her abortion. Pramila was also aware of her daughter's abuse at the hands of her own brother but allowed it to happen as long as her son, Vikram would receive an inheritance. However, five years ago, Raghuveer's first wife had witnessed what he was doing to their niece at his farmhouse. She telephoned Pramila to tell her the truth, but Pramila informed Munna so that he could arrange for Raghuveer's first wife to be killed on her way home. Chunni's father was also killed as collateral damage.
After finally realizing the truth, Vikram disowns his family and leaves. Pramila confesses to the police and commits suicide before she is arrested. Karuna and Karan are the only ones who inherit their father's wealth but leaves a favourable share for Radha after finding out how she was abused. Jatil, who has been leading the life of a bachelor for all these years, finally finds love in Radha.

Cast

of NDTV gave four stars out of five & said, "The film does to the crime and punishment genre what Bulbbul did to the supernatural revenge fantasy - lifts it many notches above the ordinary." Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express gave three stars out of five & said, "A few of the bits and pieces in Netflix's Raat Akeli Hai feel a bit contrived, but not enough to take the enjoyment away from a film which has a terrific sense of time and place, and a crime in which everyone has stakes." Komal Nahta of Film Information said, "It's a well-made and well-enacted whodunit. However, the last about half an hour seems rather implausible and, therefore, is not as exciting as it should’ve been." Rohan Naahar of Hindustan Times said, "Raat Akeli Hai is quite the achievement. Trehan not only has a skill for directing actors, but also displays a command over tone and visual texture."
