Formerly known as Lady Willingdon Road and starting from the Jadavpur P.S. at its north end, it traverses about four kilometers to Garia through many important landmarks like the Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute, Jadavpur University, Indian Association of Cultivation of Science, Indian Institute of Chemical Biology and KPC Medical College & Hospital. The intersection of Raja SC Mullick Road and Central Road is a very busy place with the 8B bus stand, numerous shops, restaurants, Jadavpur Railway Station, Auto Rickshaw stands and Government Offices in its vicinity. Residents say that the entire 4-kilometer stretch is a commuters’ nightmare. The situation is worse at four points — at the EM Bypass crossing opposite the route 45 bus terminus, a complete nightmare at Jadavpur 8B bus terminus, then at Bagha Jatin, and finally at the four-point crossing in Garia. Recently, to ease traffic flow, the public works department has decided to widen the road up to 60 feet. The four-km stretch of this road is between 25 and 60 feet wide now. The PWD has sanctioned Rs 3 crore for the project. If everything goes according to schedule, the work will be completed by monsoon of 2009. Like the other well-known roads, the entire stretch is full with food hawkers and street vendors. There are vendors with little kerosene stoves making egg toasts—an omelette on a lightly toasted sliced bread and serving them with a cup of tea. Then there are little food stalls selling rolls - chicken roll, egg-chicken rolls etc. The ones in front of Jadavpur market are specially good! Then there is roti served with ghugny and aloor dom, shingara, muglai paratha, chow mein, chilli chicken, biryani, sweetmeats and, of course, chai.
Food joints
The 8B bus stand junction on this road is very crowded but it offers a variety of restaurants, food stalls and confectionaries on Central Road. There are air-conditioned restaurants such as Banzara, Blue Lagoon. Then there are small snack shops selling Chicken patties and other snacks such as Sugar and Spice, Bake Club. There are a number of confectionaries selling a large variety of Bengali sweets. These are Hindustan Sweets, Shri Krishna Mistanna Bhandar, Kamdhenu, Ganguram to name a few. Finally, there are several nameless stalls on the road selling rolls and a Kolkata street variety of Chow Mein and Chili Chicken. Besides the local population, the students and faculties of Jadavpur University are also customers of these stores.
This is a highly respected national research institute. Prof C. V. Raman got his Nobel prize while working in this institute during the 1920-1930s. The institute then was located in South Kolkata.
On S.C.Mullick Road, three big apartment complexes have come up recently. They are Ekta Heights, Orbit City and West Wind. These are gated communities with several multistoried apartment buildings in each. Each complex also has facilities like gym, swimming pool, car parking for residents, security guard. Some complexes also provide Tennis Court, standby generator, garbage collection.
