Ray MacDonnell
Raymond Arthur MacDonnell is an American actor, best known for his role as Dr. Joe Martin on the daytime soap opera All My Children, a role he played for 40 years. MacDonnell received a Daytime Emmy award for Lifetime Achievement in 2004. Prior to appearing on All My Children, he played Philip Capice on the soap The Edge of Night from 1961–69. In 1967, he played the title role of Dick Tracy in a live-action television pilot. The show was not picked up.
On September 29, 2009, MacDonnell announced his retirement from All My Children. Production of the show moved from New York to California in December 2009, marking the end of his 40-year run, although he would make guest appearances from time to time. His retirement from AMC left Susan Lucci, portrayer of Erica Kane, as the only original cast member still performing on the show. In February 2011, it was announced that MacDonnell along with on-screen wife, Lee Meriwether, would be making a three-day return to All My Children on March 8, 9, and 16. Raymond Arthur MacDonnell was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He attended Amherst College through the G.I. Bill, subsequently receiving a Fulbright Scholarship to London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. He is married and has three children.
