He grew up in Vienna, attended secondary school at the Theresianum there and obtained his academic degrees from the University of Vienna, including a PhD in 2005. He has made contributions to various areas of mathematical statistics, including non-parametric and high-dimensional inference and empirical process theory. Jointly with Evarist Giné, he is the author of the monograph `Mathematical foundations of infinite-dimensional statistical models', published with Cambridge University Press, which won the 2017 PROSE Award in the mathematics category.
