Roanoke Island, North Carolina half dollar


The Roanoke Island, North Carolina half dollar is a commemorative coin issued by the United States Mint in 1937. The coin commemorated the 350th anniversary of the Roanoke Colony.

Production and sales

Unlike most United States commemorative coins, the Roanoke Island half dollar did not have a maximum authorized mintage. However, did impose a minimum mintage of 25,000, with a provision stated that no coins could be struck after July 1, 1937. The Philadelphia Mint struck 25,000 pieces in January, and a further 25,000 in June. 15 extra coins were struck in each batch for assay.
A total of 29,000 coins were sold, with the remainder being returned to the mint for melting.
