Robert J. Frankel Stakes

The Robert J. Frankel Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run at Santa Anita Park early each year. A Grade IIIT event, it is open to fillies and mares, age four and up, willing to race one and one-eighth miles on the turf. The race currently carries a purse of $100,000.
Run from inception in 1968 through 1975 as the San Gorgonio Claiming Stakes 1969 to 1975, it became the San Gorgonio Handicap until being renamed in 2010 to honor the late Hall of Fame trainer Robert J. Frankel.
The 2016 Robert J. Frankel Stakes lost its G3 rating when, for safety reasons, the race was switched from the turf course to the dirt track.
The race was run in January and December in 1977 and again in 2012.
