Roman Catholic Diocese of Sant'Agata de' Goti The former Roman Catholic Diocese of Sant'Agata de' Goti , in the Province of Benevento , Campania , southern Italy, was a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Benevento from 969 till its 1986 merger into the Diocese of Cerreto Sannita-Telese-Sant'Agata de' Goti .History The name Sant'Agata de' Goti of the see is derived from the aristocratic family De Goth, which held the fiefdom ruling from the castle, but tradition derives it from a body of Goths who took refuge there after the battle of Vesuvius ; the church of the Goths in Rome, too, was dedicated to St. Agatha. Besides the Saticulan inscriptions there are two Christian inscriptions of the sixth century. In 866 Emperor Louis II captured it from the Byzantines , who had taken it from the Longobard Duchy of Benevento . It is first documented in the papal bulla by which Pope John XIII elevated the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Benevento , recalling it had been a bishopric 'erstwhile', and mandated its metropolitan to nominate and consecrate the bishops of the assigned suffragans, including Santa'Agatha, where he did so in 970, describing precisely its restored territory, adding that of the Ancient Diocese of Caudium . In 1066 it fell into the hands of the Normans . Around 1100 the city the monastery of San Menna , which was personally consecrated by Pope Pascal II on 4 September 1110. Mid thirteenth century, the Bishops acquired the temporal rank of Baron with the local fief of Bagnoli . The city was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1456. ;Bishops of the first see at Sant'Agata de' Goti ; Suffragan Bishops of Sant'Agata de' Goti in the province of Benevento Erected: 10th Century Latin Name: Sanctae Agathae Gothorum Madelfridus, appointed 970 Adelardus, a metrical epitaph of his is preserved in the Church of the Misericordia .
