Noteworthy members and Hall of Fame
Joe Evans:
1990-2020
Truck Engineer and Motivational Speaker.
Joe began his career with the American River Fire Protection district in 1990, and following the 2000 merger that created Metro Fire he fought the authoritarian influence of the Sacramento County Fire personnel he now shared a station with. Joe focused on a common sense approach to his profession, with hard work and sarcasm as a foundation. Joe spent much of his career at Station 50, where he was liked by most. While on Truck 50 he began to explore his passion for motivational speaking, which he focused on as he finished his 30 year career driving Truck 23 in Citrus Heights. He has expressed that following his retirement, he hopes to be quickly forgotten by the rest of the district but that his wisdom would live on.
“If your 30 year engineer says something is stupid, you should probably stop what you’re doing and find out why since he’s going to be right.”
“It’s hard work being an engineer, but nobody ever gives them credit. And what are you going to do? Tell the guys that just came out of the burning building how hard you worked for the first 3 minutes while they were inside?”
“Anyone who makes you feel good when they talk to you is most definitely full of $&#@.”

USAR Task Force 7

The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District is a member of California USAR Task Force 7, one of the eight FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Task Forces in the state. These USAR Task Forces, which were originally designed to respond to structural collapse caused by earthquakes, have evolved to be used at disasters and catastrophes, both man-made and natural. Along with members of the SMFD, the task force also has members from the Cosumnes Fire Department, Folsom Fire Department, Roseville Fire Department, West Sacramento Fire Department, El Dorado County Fire Protection District and Sacramento Fire Department.
Some of the teams most notable deployments include the Northridge earthquake, Oklahoma City bombing, World Trade Center and Hurricane Katrina.
