Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral, Shenyang


The Sacred Heart Cathedral of Shenyang is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China. It is commonly called Nanguan Catholic Church or officially the Sacred Heart of Jesus Diocesan Cathedral in Shenyang because the bishop of Shenyang Diocese resides here. In 2006 the Vatican agreed to Paul Pei being installed as the Bishop of Shenyang.

General

The Catholic church became established in northeastern China in 1838 as the Apostolic Vicariate of Liaotung 遼東 / Manchuria and Mongolia 滿蒙獨立, a French missionary, who came in 1861 by way of Yingkou. A church was built in 1861, followed by a nursery and a school. During the Boxer Rebellion of 1900, they were destroyed. Based on the indemnity of the Rebellion, a large cathedral was built by the Paris Foreign Missions Society, which remains the current cathedral.
