Sam Cosgrove


Sam Cosgrove is an English professional footballer who plays for Aberdeen, as a striker.

Career

Born in Beverley, Cosgrove grew up in Cheshire and attended Knutsford High School. He began his youth career at Everton before signing scholarship forms with Wigan Athletic in 2013. He had spells on loan at Barrow, Chorley, and North Ferriby United, but made only one first team appearance for Wigan as a late substitute in the EFL Cup against Oldham Athletic in August 2016. After being released by the club, he moved to Carlisle United in August 2017. He made eight league appearances for Carlisle, and scored his first senior goal on 13 January 2018 in a 1–0 win against Crewe Alexandra.
On 31 January 2018, he joined Scottish Premiership club Aberdeen. He was sent off on his debut for Aberdeen, a 2–0 defeat against Celtic on 25 February. After scoring a number of goals in December 2018, he was awarded Scottish Premiership player of the month. In January 2019, Cosgrove signed a contract extension until 2022 with the Dons.
In August 2019 his form was praised by Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes. Later that month he was linked in Italian media with a transfer to Lazio, which was denied by Aberdeen. In December 2019 Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack confirmed the club had received no offers or approaches from other clubs for Cosgrove or teammate Scott McKenna.
In July 2020, Aberdeen accepted a bid from French club Guingamp for Cosgrove, but the player rejected the move.
