Savvy (novel)

Savvy is a 2008 children's fantasy novel by Ingrid Law aimed at children aged nine to twelve. The American Library Association named Savvy a 2009 Newbery Honor Book. Before Mibs turns thirteen her Poppa gets into a terrible accident. Eager to save him, Mibs sneaks on a bus with her siblings and the preacher's kids. But when the bus starts heading the wrong direction, it will take new friends, savvy's and a whole lot of growing up for Mibs to truly save Poppa.

Summary

Two days before turning thirteen, Mibs conjures up ideas of what her new savvy could be. But when her Momma receives a call saying that her Poppa got into a car accident, Momma and Rocket go to Salina to visit him, leaving Mibs, her siblings, and Grandpa by themselves. The next day, Mibs boards the bus with her younger brother Samson, where she gets bullied and made fun of. After a dreadful last day of school, Mibs arrives home with an unexpected visit from Miss Rosemary and her children, Bobbi and Will Junior. Miss Rosemary later decides to throw Mibs a birthday party, not knowing that she could threaten the secrets the Beaumonts want to keep secret.
The next morning, after waking up, Mibs notices Gypsy awaken from a deep slumber. Even Samson's pet turtle, who everyone had presumed dead, wakes up from his hibernation when Mibs passes it. This gives Mibs an idea for her unknown savvy. Wearing the special outfit her Poppa picked out for her, Mibs attends her party and runs into Bobbi, whose tattoo of an angel talks to her. Passing out from the encounter, Mibs awakens to find everyone arguing, and leaves to find a way to Salina. Sneaking onto a pink bus delivering bibles, she is soon accompanied by Fish, Will Junior, and Bobbi. She discovers Samson hiding behind the bus already. But when the bus starts heading the wrong direction, Mibs gives off her location.
After talking to Lester, the bus driver, he agrees to take them to Salina once he finishes his deliveries. Along the way, they pick up a woman named Lill, who works as a waitress. When they arrive at the diner she works at, she gives them some food, while Mibs explains to Fish that she has finally realized her actual savvy: the ability to read minds through ink. Unfortunately, Bobbi overhears them and tells Will Junior. Meanwhile, Ozzie, Lills boss, fires Lill. After causing a ruckus, the group heads back to the bus, where Fish finally learns to scumble his savvy.
Lill eventually learns the kids ran away and uses her last paycheck to buy rooms at a hotel for them. Tricking Lill into believing their parents know their whereabouts, they hide the missing-person reports they've seen of themselves. The next day, Lester drives to Carlene's house to pay her back for the bibles. When Samson gets left behind, Mibs uses her savvy to find him, but not before the police arrive. Comprehending their story, Officer Bill Meeks, decides to allow his son and his friends to go to Salina with them.
Lester drives the group to the hospital where Miss Rosemary, Pastor Meeks, and the rest of Mibs's family await them. While the Meekses are forced to leave, Mibs and her family enter her Poppa's room. She discovers him in a comalike state, but using her savvy, Mibs is able to awaken him by speaking to him through his tattoo.
A year later, Rocket has decided to move to his Uncle Aunty's ranch to learn to scumble his savvy. Also, Fish has mastered his savvy well enough to start high school in the fall. But Mibs decides to stay home-schooled for a year or two, to give her enough time to truly master her savvy. After overhearing her Momma's thoughts of a new Beaumont heading on its way, Mibs decides that she is happy because things are perfect and quiet, and they will stay that way... at least until Samson turns thirteen.

Characters

Kirkus Reviews awarded Savvy a starred review, praising Law's "fertile imagination" and "dab hand for likable, colorful characters". Susan Faust of the San Francisco Chronicle called the storytelling "magical" but noted that some of the adventures were improbable. The website Kidsreads called it "fun, hilarious, relatable and enduring".
In addition to the 2009 Newbery Honor, Savvy was named the second runner up in the 2011 Indian Paintbrush Book Award.

''Scumble''

The sequel to Savvy, Scumble, was released in August 2010. The plot follows a cousin of Mibs', Ledger Kale, whose savvy is to break anything, and also takes place ten years afterward.
His parents decide to leave Ledge and his sister Fedora in Wyoming for the summer, along with cousins Samson and Gypsy Beaumont and Marisol and Mesquite O'Connell, so Ledge can learn to scumble his savvy before he returns home to Indiana. Sarah Jane keeps finding him and disturbing him, as she wants to know more about The Flying Cattleheart, Uncle Autry's bug ranch. As her father keeps finding Ledge and his daughter talking, he grows angrier and eventually decides to foreclose and destroy the ranch. Throughout, Ledge and SJ begin to fall in love, and Ledge starts going to an auto repair woman named Winona, who uses spare parts for sculptures, which Ledge begins to do using his savvy. Winona meets Rocket, and the two evidently begin a relationship, which is a release for Rocket, who withdrew into himself after accidentally electrocuting but not killing Bobbi Meeks, who was in the first book.
Eventually, Uncle Autry reveals the truth about the Cabots: SJ's mother was the last in a savvy family and was best friends with Autry; she had the ability to grow trees abnormally quickly and turn other objects into trees. She and Noble Cabot got married where Fish and his bride Mellie did, out at the ranch. A few years after SJ was born, Summer Cabot became deathly ill, and in an act that grieved and enraged her husband, transformed herself into a tree before she could die. Noble hated Autry after that and shielded SJ from the world of savvies. However, Sarah Jane has now come into her own savvy, to make anyone believe something she has written.

''Switch''

The sequel to "Savvy" and "Scumble", Switch was released in September 2015. The plot follows Mibs' sister Gypsy who originally has the savvy to see the past and future, which inexplicably becomes the ability to stop time, and takes place a few months after Ledge's adventure.
