Shawmut Motor Company
The Shawmut Motor Company was organized in Stoneham, Massachusetts in November, 1905. It was located in the vacant Phelps Motor Vehicle Company plant. The initial product was the Model 6 - a four-cylinder touring car costing $4750. A less expensive Roundabout model was produced later for $3500. The company folded after a fire on November 13, 1908 destroyed the factory and several surrounding buildings.
A Shawmut Roundabout was entered into the 1909 Ocean to Ocean Automobile Endurance Contest from New York to Seattle. It was driven by Robert Messer, Earl Chapin and Arthur Pettingill. The Shawmut was the second to arrive in Seattle, behind a Ford Model T. However, due to a protest, and subsequent discovery of rules violations, the Ford was disqualified and the Shawmut declared the winner.
