Sherwood Picking


Sherwood Picking was a U.S. Navy officer who became a notable submarine commander during World War I.
Picking was a native of Baltimore, Maryland. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1911. During World War I, Lieutenant Commander Picking was awarded the Navy Cross for his heroism as the commander of the submarine. During the inter-war period, he commanded the submarine base at Coco Solo, Canal Zone. He was promoted to captain on 1 July 1939. He died on 1 September 1941 in a plane crash in Scotland en route to temporary duty in London.
