Shirley Armstrong


Shirley Armstrong-Duffy was an Irish fencer. She competed in the women's individual foil event at the 1960 Summer Olympics for the Republic of Ireland.

Biography

Armstrong married Irish fencer, Patrick Joseph Duffy. Armstrong and Duffy founded The Irish Academy of Arms in 1952 and ran it successful in Dublin for years. Both were involved with fencing clubs at University College Dublin, Royal College of Surgeons and Trinity College Dublin. They helped to build it into a club which dominated fencing in Ireland and became one of the premier clubs in the country. In 1958, they were both heavily involved in the re-establishment of the International Academy of Fencing Masters and ran Salle D'armes for many years.
Armstrong died on 21 December 2018, in Roscommon University Hospital.
