Shore Road Pumping Station

The Shore Road Pumping Station is a pumping station situated in Birkenhead, on the Wirral Peninsula, England. It contains the pumps which remove water from the railway tunnel under the River Mersey. When it was built in the 1870s the pumps were driven by steam beam engines. Electric pumps subsequently replaced the beam engines; however one of the original pumps, the 'Giant Grasshopper', remains on display.
In 2009, as part of its Strategic Asset Review, owners Wirral Borough Council planned to sell the museum. Sometime after mid-2012 but before early 2014, the museum closed to the public.
