The Siam Cement Group Public Company Limited is the largest and oldest cement and building material company in Thailand and Southeast Asia. In 2016, SCG was also ranked as the second largest company in Thailand and the 604th largest public company in the world by Forbes. The company is SET50 and -listed and an industry benchmark. The company's major shareholder is the Crown Property Bureau, which owns 30 percent of Siam Cement's shares.
Consolidated revenues were 450 billion baht in FY2017. The cement and building materials unit contributed 38 percent; 44 percent from the chemicals unit; and 18 percent from the packaging unit. In 2016, SCG was ranked No.1 of the top graduate employer in Thailand polled by Asia Internship Program

History

19131931

SCG was founded to set up the first cement plant in Bangkok, Thailand by a royal decree of King Rama VI in 1913. The first meeting of SCG at the office of The Siam Observer newspaper company. One year later SCG plant appoints Mr. Oscar Schultz, a Danish to be the first manager of SCG.
In 1915, The Bang Sue Cement Plant started production of 20,000 tons per year and increased to 27,000 tons. In 1916, The company discovered the kaolin source in Ban Mo District. Saraburi Province Six years later, The Bang Sue Cement Plant started operation of the second cement kiln, with a production capacity of 35,000 tons per year.
In 1925, the company appointed Denmark's Mr. Eric Thun as the 2nd SCG manager. Four years later, The Bang Sue Cement Plant started operation of the third cement kiln, with a production capacity of 108,000 tons per year.

19321950

The Siamese revolution in 1932 had a profound effect on the King's treasury department, which is the main shareholder of SCG. Three years later, the company appointed Denmark's Mr. Carsten Cifrit Yetpersen as the 3rd SCG manager. Later, Khana Ratsadon members took part in the management of the organization.
In 1938, Thai Paper Tile Company Limited was established to produce roof tiles. This is the beginning of SCG's construction products business. In 1942, SCG began producing steel in accordance with the government's steel industry development policy. Two years later, During World War 2, the Allied bombers fell around the Bang Sue cement factory. First cement kiln and the second cement kiln was damaged.
In 1948, Tha Luang Cement Factory Saraburi has completed construction, which is the second cement plant of SCG, with production capacity of 130,000 tons per year. Two years later, SCG started to produce ductile iron for the first time.

19511961

From 1951 to 1954, The company's steel factory opened a section for cast iron parts to produce metal parts for machinery instead of ordering from foreign countries. Construction Products and Materials Company Limited was established to produce precast concrete, prestressed concrete and reinforced concrete by opening the country's first prestressed concrete factory. The refractory brick factory began production. The Tha Luang Cement plant started the second cement kiln with a production capacity of 130,000 tons per year. In 1957, The Tha Luang Cement plant started the third cement kiln with a production capacity of 210,000 tons per year.
In 1958, King Rama IX and Queen Sirikit visited the Tha Luang Cement Factory. One year later, the company appointed Denmark's Mr. Viggo Fred Hemingsen as the 4th SCG manager. The Tha Luang Cement plant started the fourth cement kiln with a production capacity of 210,000 tons per year. In 1961, Products and Construction Materials Co., Ltd. is accelerating the production of reinforced concrete pipes with international standards, being the first company in the country.

19621974

In 1962, Building Materials Trade Co., Ltd. was established to distribute the products of various companies of SCG, the company started the construction of the Thung Song Cement factory in Nakhon Si Thammarat province in the same year, Frederick IX and Queen Ingrid visits Tha Luang Cement plant.
In 1963, Bang Sue cement plant installed the 4th kiln with a production capacity of 100,000 tons per year. The Construction Products and Materials Company Limited established the first ready-mix concrete factory in Bang Son and brought the concrete mixer truck for the first time. The company set up a fund to use the business profits to help society in various ways, becoming the beginning of the SCG Foundation. In 1964, Bang Sue cement plant installed the 6th kiln with a production capacity of 100,000 tons per year. Two years later, The company established Thung Song Cement Factory Nakhon Si Thammarat Province using the production process as the first dry river in the country with a production capacity of 460,000 tons per year. In 1966, Bang Sue cement plant installed the 4th kiln with a production capacity of 100,000 tons per year by stopping production of kiln no.1 and 2 due to the long service life and adjusting the system of kiln no 2 to produce white cement instead.
In 1971, the company built a cement plant in Kaeng Khoi, Saraburi Province. The 4th Cement Plant of SCG With annual production capacity of 570,000 tons In 1972, the company improved the management structure to include all the companies under the Thai Cement Group and use the new logo, Chang Phueak, in a hexagon shape. The company, products and construction materials started to produce prestressed concrete pipes. "CPAC Crokla" is released for the first time. Two years later, Mr Boonma Wong Sawan is the first Thai person to be appointed as the 5th SCG manager.

19751986

In 1975, the Kaeng Khoi Cement Plant in Saraburi installed the second kiln, resulting in a production capacity of 1,100,000 tons per year. In 1976, the company entered a loan agreement with Siam Kraft Company Limited, a manufacturer of kraft paper that is having financial problems, which marks the beginning of SCG's paper business. In 1978, Siam Kubota Diesel Company Limited was established as a joint venture with Kubota Co., Ltd. from Japan to produce small diesel engines, being the first joint venture business of SCG and Construction Materials Trading Company Limited. International Trade, Thai Cement Ltd. conducts international trade business. One year later, Nawaloha Co., Ltd. installed the first automatic machine in the country to produce diesel engine parts and automotive parts. In 1981, Tha Luang Cement Plant installed the 6th kiln with a production capacity of 1,600,000 tons per year. One year later, Bang Sue Cement Plant terminated all production. And the company organized the opening ceremony of the 11-storey headquarters building with a 70th anniversary celebration as well as expanding investment in the chemical business by establishing Thai Polyethylene Company Limited.

19872002

In 1987, SCG established Siam Toyota Industrial Co., Ltd. to produce engines for automobiles. And established Thai CRT Co., Ltd. to produce color television tubes and to establish Siam Sanitary Fittings Company Limited to produce sanitary ware equipment. In 1990, SCG entered into a joint venture with TileCera Inc. to produce ceramic tiles for the United States market. And establishing the Siam Cement Industry Land Company Limited to support the business expansion of the affiliated companies and joint venture companies of SCG. The completed cement plant in Khao Wong, Saraburi province is considered to have the largest cement kiln in the world with a production capacity of 3,600,000 tons. In 1993, SCG established 4 new companies which are Siam Refractory Industry Company Limited Siam Pipe Products Company Limited Siam Fiberglass Company Limited and Siam Cement Myanmar Trading Company Limited In 1994, SCG established Thai Lampang Cement Company Limited, with a factory with a production capacity of 2.1 million tons.
In 1996, SCG was voted "Most Ethical and Veritable Company in Asia Business Review" and later Prince Masahito Hitachi and Her Royal Highness visited the SCG Research and Development Center in Bangkok. In 1997, SCG adapted to face the economic crisis by reducing its role in non-specialized businesses, controlling production costs, accelerating exports without layoffs. In 1999 after the economic crisis, SCG restructured its organization structure by focusing on the cement, chemical and paper businesses. Later, SCG issued debentures that received overwhelming public interest and also stimulated the private bond market.

2003present

Expansion in Asia

In 2010, SCG established a showroom in Hanoi, Vietnam, which is the first showroom of SCG outside Thailand. In 2012, SCG organized the ASEAN Sustainable Development Symposium 2012 to build a sustainable development network to ASEAN.
Since then, the company has expanded into various businesses with three core business units: SCG Cement-building materials; SCG Chemicals; and SCG Packaging.
In 2016, SCG expanded investment into Southeast Asia regions region by building cement plants in Indonesia, Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos.
In 2018, SCG invested in the Long Son Petrochemicals project. Large scale integrated petrochemical in Vietnam.
SCG employs approximately 54,000 employees. The products are marketed domestically and exported to all regions of the world. Cementhai Holding Co., Ltd. oversees SCG's investment in various businesses. Most are joint ventures with internationally renowned companies, for example, Kubota, Yamato Kogyo, Aisin Takaoka Group, Nippon Steel, Toyota Motor, Michelin, Hayes Lemmerz, Siam Mitsui,and Dow Chemical company.

Research and development

In 1992, SCG opened a research center and technology development institute to support product development in the cement and building materials groups.
In 2014, SCG Chemicals acquired 51 percent of Norner for developing plastic and polymer technology.
SCG emphasizes research and development. In 2016, R&D spending was one percent of sales and value-added products contributed more than 35 percent of sales. In 2017, HVA products accounted for nearly 40 percent of sales. SCG established AddVentures, a company in the form of Corporate Ventures Capital, to invest in startup businesses and establish an Open Innovation Center to further develop innovations with high potential in the Materials Clean and Sensor & Internet of Things. Siam Research and Innovation Company Limited conducts research and development of new products and services related to cement, mortar, concrete, building materials, 3D printing, prefabrication, recycled aggregate, and refractory.
In 2017, SCG received the "Asia IP Elite 2016" award for the third consecutive year. The award is given by Intellectual Asset Management, a leading magazine in strategic management of intellectual property.

The Siam Cement Group is sponsor of football, badminton, and golf events in Thailand and Southeast Asia. It sponsors the Thai League 1 club Muangthong United, Vietnamese V-League club Hà Nội F.C. and SCG Stadium.
